So I watched this movie titled "Dry" few months ago and I have been pondering on it. I feel the need to talk about this great educative movie written by our very own 'Stephenie Okereke Linus'.
DRY talks about two important things affecting a part of Nigerian population ;Early marriage and Fistula.
Early marriage poses a great threat to the health of our young girls, exposing them to life challenges that is beyond them. Imagine a girl of 13 years old having to endure pregnancy and its complications. The society in which they expect protection from decided to set a rule that allows them to be vulnerable to predators, taking away their 'childhood'. How can a society decide to make a child a mother to another child ? rendering them psychologically drained and endangering their lives.
Let's talk about Obstetrics Fistula, this is a hole between the vagina and rectum or bladder that is caused by prolonged obstructed labor, leaving a woman incontinent of urine or feces or both.
Now to the 13year old that was made to bear a child at such a tender age, her cervix and vagina is still undergoing anatomical development and therefore cannot conveniently allow passage of a fetus thereby causing an obstruction and leading to prolonged labor. This will cause a tear in between the vagina and the anus leading to fistula, the young mother probably lost her child due to prolonged labor and has to bear this "worrisome" condition she acquired. Now imagine such a young girl having to bear the consequence of something the society placed on her weak shoulders.
Solution; The Nigeria government has to advocate fair treatment of our young girls, which will allow them to enjoy their childhood as they are still children that need parental guidance and not husband's love and defilement.
I STAND FOR THE GIRL CHILD!!!
I STAND FOR FAIRNESS !!!
I STAND FOR WHAT IS RIGHT!!!
LET' S KICK AGAINST CHILD MARRIAGE!!!
GIVE OUR GIRLS THE CHANCE TO ENJOY THEIR "CHILDHOOD"
